Stepping back to the 1950’s – there was a post World War
II building boom in California. The GI Bill that was
passed into law in 1944 provided grants for education,
low-interest mortgage and small business loans, job
training and hiring privileges. After the war ended
and all the soldiers returned home, builders in
California built new homes covering a 20 mile stretch
that included Berkeley, Oakland, Alameda, San Leandro,
San Lorenzo, Castro Valley and Hayward. All the cities
were in Alameda County and are collectively called the
Bay Area. |
