Attached Documents: Transcript of TUSD Governing Board Meeting, May 10, 2011 - Remarks by John Munger
TUSD Materials to be used with Grade 3 Civil Rights
TUSD MASD, High School Course Texts and Reading Lists

During the 5/10/11 TUSD Board meeting "call to the audience," passages were read from a book used in the Mexican-American Studies (MAS) courses. The title is also listed as "civil rights" material for TUSD's third graders. The book is Message to Aztlan: Selected writings of Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales (2001) [2].

At one point, the Superintendent interrupted the speaker and told the Board President, ". . . I’m going to ask that the language not be mentioned during public meetings. We may have young people in this room. It’s inappropriate.” Apparently the language is okay for class material but not okay for public disclosure at a school board meeting!

Attached is a transcript. It also includes two other speaker's remarks -- including those by John Munger [3] who is an attorney and former member of the Arizona Board of Regents (for the state university system). Munger, among other things, says the MAS books he has read "are classical showpieces of Marxist oriented indoctrination . . ."

Additionally, Tucson Weekly ran an article titled "Education vs. Fear" by Mari Herreras (11/11/2010) that contains a comment "Posted by ap on November 13, 2010 at 9:17 AM" in which "Message to Aztlan" was identified as text used under the description of "Highlights of Social Justice, Resistance, and Latino Literature English 7/8".
